NOW's purpose is to take action to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society now, exercising all privileges and responsibilities thereof in truly equal partnership with men. This purpose includes, but is not limited to, equal rights and responsibilities in all aspects of citizenship, public service, employment, education, and family life, and it includes freedom from discrimination because of race, ethnic origin, age, marital status, sexual preference/orientation, or parenthood.
NOW, Inc., was established on June 30, 1966 in Washington, D.C., by women attending the Third National Conference of the Commission on the Status of Women. The President's Commission on the Status of Women, had reported in 1963 that despite having won the right to vote, women in the United States still were discriminated against in virtually every aspect of life. At the 1966 conference, some of the members became frustrated over the fact that although the Commission was able to report its findings regarding discrimination against women, it wasn't allowed to do anything about it. Betty Friedan, one of the members, invited others to meet with her. Friedan wrote the letters N O W on a napkin. Then the women each pitched in a dollar and wrote a statement of purpose on the napkin. NOW's statement of purpose has remained unchanged from that very day.
